Help?

A man that I have been in a relationship with for a long time says he loves me. I used to like him, a lot, not quite love though. I feel really bad, and want to break it off, but I have no idea how to. Emotionally he still needs me, he tells me the darkest of his secrets, and they get very dark.
He's very unstable sometimes, and I'm afraid that he would hurt himself if I ever tried to end anything, and I like hanging out with him, I just don't love him more than a friend.
