i should have known

Three years ago, my mother, a once empowered woman, became consumed with depression and the disease of addiction. She would stay out longer and longer, and gradually stopped coming home at all. She spent weeks in the hospital, her arms eaten by gangrene. I never suspected this was inflicted by injecting drugs. When she ended up living on the streets, i lied and told my friends when she and my dad had divorced, and she had found a good job in another city. This is partly true, if you recommend prostitution. I'm tired of hiding the shame....
the worst is looking back at all the signs of a drug addiction...weight loss, mood swings, constant debt, unexplained anger from someone normally so loving....
i was only 14 but i should have known.....
