I'm thinking that they intimidate you because you don't have the advantage of being able to use your attractiveness to make up for insecurities about your personality or intelligence. You have to interact with gay men on a level which doesn't include a degree of sexual attraction which would otherwise make up for deficiencies in other areas. Your confidence is derived mostly from the sexual tension you generate in heterosexual men which tends to make them less critical of your more elemental faults.
