Once upon a time

You made promises you couldnt keep. You promised that it wouldnt be any different afterwards. But I wasnt a necessity anymore. I was an afterthought. You assumed I would always be there so are dates were cancelled in favor of parties, drinking, and girlfriends. Even when you were with me we had trouble connecting. You still wanted to treat me like a little girl; hence the stuffed animals. I just wanted you to stop pretending. The allusions to the past are all that you feel can bind me to you. Resting my head on your lap when you tucked me in. The night walks to the beach with Gallagher and watching her swim. The ice cream and power puff girl sessions. The trips to the beach to pick seashells before school. A promise to take me to prom. I didnt even see you on prom. Even if I had asked you you probably wouldnt have been able to come anyway. Id rather not be near you and be happy, then be with you having to pretend. They think Im crazy for abandoning my father. But thats not true. You abandoned me first. I am denied the father I expected to watch over and guide me as I reach adulthood. Once upon a time my father was a good man. Now all I have is a memory.
