Maybe they don't pity you, but they're curious, or don't know how to act. They shouldn't hate you, they have no reason to. If it bothers you when someone asks you a stupid question like "can I get you anything?", ask them the same thing. The smart ones will figure it out. ;) Good luck, and thank you for the perspective.
