The voices tell me to.

I hear voices. Sometimes they tell me to cut myself. Sometimes they tell me to starve myself. I do it so they will shut up and leave me alone for awhile. If I don't, they get angry and step out of the shadows.
Everyone thinks I'm happy. They have no idea.

Do you have a history of abuse? Often times people who hear voices are diagnosed schizaphernic, when really they have alters or parts (DID). These self-destructive voice(s) are associated with mood states or certain feelings. Seek help. You aren't alone, many people suffer from this. Either way, talking to a professional will help guide to you towards some relief. I hope this helps.

by stepping out of the shadows I mean I actually see them, or feel them grabbing hold of me. which is so much scarier than just hearing their voices.
Its getting better though. a bit.

Talk to them. I had a similar neurosis. Ask the voices why they tell you these things, and as long as you're firmly rooted in reality, once they answer you, they'll work with you, then fade away.
